[I Wonder]

Who still checks this blog regularly enough to see this. (:

Anyway, I decided to visit this space again because I have to write an essay for the NUS - USP application. Since I don't regularly record or discuss concepts and ideas which "intrigue" me on anywhere but my blog... I figured this would be the best place to retrieve everything.

Okay, truth to be told, I'm only blogging this because I'm afraid that if I "steal" my own idea and use the same words to express my thoughts, that the USP people would find this blog and think I plagiarized it, because after all, "Rachel" is not part of my NRIC. I suppose I would call this a preventive measure, just in case that really happens.

I think too far right? -.-

[Monday Morning]

I decided to set up a tumblr account for the fun of it. (:

I have no tuition today because TuitionBoy has a scout parade to attend... Monday mornings aren't ALL bad (especially if you sleep through them) - I woke up at 12 today.

[Do You Ever...]

Worry that if you look too hard, you'll realise that perhaps this isn't what you were in search of after all?

Sometimes... I don't want to be disillusioned, disentangled, disengaged.

[Vocabulary Police]

I can sense that I will regret this post a few minutes after the intended individual reads it. Hm. Oh well.

Today my issue is with the colloquial term "stead", often used by Singaporean teenagers (especially those of ages 12-15) to refer to the boy or girl that they have just gotten together with.

I see a clear... misuse of this term, just as such individuals often misuse the word "anniversary". And the answer is no, you cannot say "monthly anniversary" because then the words will contradict each other. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word anniversary, coined in the early 13th century, comes from the Latin word anniversarius "returning annually," from annus (gen. anni) "year" (see annual) + versus, pp. of vertere "to turn" (see versus). Evidently, "anniversary" can only refer to events that happen yearly. If these individuals so wish to celebrate their attachment on a monthly basis, perhaps the coining of a new term, such as "monthaversary" would be more appropriate... but I digress.

The above-mentioned colloquial term is most likely to have stemmed from the word "steady", that is "going steady" with one's boy or girlfriend. On a side note, if you check the same dictionary as above, that phrase has been used since 1905 as teenager slang (which is actually longer than Singapore's history ._.).

The issue I have with Singaporean teenagers using that word is their lack of regard for the connotations behind that phrase! When you say you are "going steady" with someone, it means that you have been dating around regularly but have decided to stick with this one guy or girl who is now your official (and exclusive) boy or girlfriend. You are committed to this individual and the both of you are at least somewhat steadfast and unwavering in your relationship.

However, my experience (as a third party) with such relationships is that they simply cannot be classified under such a category. For one, being Asians, most Singaporean teenagers do not actually date non-exclusively. So without there being a state of non-exclusivity, there is no progression from one state to another, thus removing the significance of the use of the phrase "going steady". For another, these relationships are often exceedingly short-lived. At the age of 12 or 13, most teenagers are unable to comprehend the requirements of a successful relationship and neither have they developed the necessary patience and understanding to sustain one. This then injects a certain ludicrousness to the use of the phrase because the relationship isn't even CLOSE to being steady or stable. (Here I am being openly judgmental).

[Kryptonite]

Two weeks is how long one takes to learn that one is still fundamentally human - limited to one's very mortal ways.

I still walk with human limbs, touch with human hands, see with human eyes, smell with a human nose, taste with a human tongue, beat with a human heart. When you reach your limits, you push your boundaries, but you can only go so far. Eventually, you have to take a step back and revise your options.

Fall back, fall back. Perhaps fall away altogether.

I, the human girl in my entirety, can only push so hard. "All my pleasures are homely ones" so this is as far as the fabric goes.

No more "superhuman inhumanities". I know that now.

[One Two]

Two songs I've been listening to lately:

Natsu no Yuki - NICO Touches the Walls

A little too many Sha-la-la-la-la-las, but I like the music. Not posting any lyrics for this one because I wouldn't know whether it's correct anyway.

Georgia - Hanson

Georgia, you know that you've been on my mind
Georgia, we both learned to compromise
I'll be there for you
When everybody's coming unglued
I'll be there for you
I won't say you have to choose

'Cause I don't want to let you go
And I don't want to lose you slowly
I just want to let you know
That it's only just a little back and forth lately

Georgia, I'll be chasing you the rest of my life
Georgia, welcome to the roller coaster ride
When I come to you
I know that you'll me help get through
I'll be there for you
We both know we could never choose

'Cause I don't want to let you go
And I don't want to lose you slowly
I just want to let you know
That it's only just a little back and forth
It's only just a little back and forth lately

You carry it like a heavyweight champ
It's hard to say I can't but I know I can't be right there standing

'Cause I don't want to let you go
And I don't want to lose you slowly
I just want to let you know
That it's only just a little back and forth lately

I could never let go
After all that you've been to me
I just want to let you know
That's it's only just a little back and forth
Yeah it's only just a little back and forth lately

A little back and forth lately
A little back and forth
